Actor Patrick Swayze Dies at 57

Actor Patrick Swayze, who attained heartthrob status in the movies Dirty Dancing and Ghost, died Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer; he was 57. The star revealed in March of 2008 that he was suffering from the deadly form of cancer, but continued working on the A&E series The Beast, and remained optimistic in interviews and on the set during his treatment.

Swayze shot to fame in the early ’80s as part of the destined-for-fame ensemble in the 1983 drama The Outsiders, and also appeared in the action drama Red Dawn before taking on one of the lead roles in the popular miniseries North and South. He hit his zenith of fame in the late ’80s and early ’90s with the smash hit Dirty Dancing (1987), the cult fave Road House (1989), and the Oscar-winner Ghost (1990), opposite Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, where his pottery-making scene with Moore became one of cinema’s most iconic romantic scenes.

His films in the ’90s included another cult favorite, Point Break, as well as the drama City of Joy, the cross-dressing comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar, and the indie hit Donnie Darko. He reprised his Dirty Dancing role in the quasi-remake Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. In addition to his role in The Beast, Swayze most recently appeared in the drama Powder Blue and British comedy Keeping Mum.

Swayze is survived by his wife Lisa Niemi, whom he married in 1975.

John Hughes: 1950-2009

We’re still in shock after learning that John Hughes passed away today in Manhattan, at age 59.

Perhaps it’s because 59 seems too young, or maybe it’s more that he’s someone that has such strong ties to and influence on the teen years of so many of us, that we’re strangely without words.  We find ourselves only able to reminisce about funny scenes in films he directed or bits of dialogue that we still repeat to this day.  (We’re pulling together a group of favorite video clips from his movies and will be adding them to the upper left-hand side of our homepage any minute now.)

So we ask: what are some of your favorite John Hughes-related moments?  What are the characters, or places, or scenes that stick with you even now?

The mishmash of 3-D footage we just saw in the hour before the New Moon panel didn’t amount to much until a reel from The Final Destination put a bloody cap on the presentation. The filmmakers and some of the cast from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs came and went in a flash, with a 3-D trailer that finally drew my attention to the movie. Interestingly enough, Andy Samberg got a better reception than Anna Faris. Then *poof* and they were gone.

Joe Dante just premiered 2 different sequences from The Hole, which is still without a studio — I thought he make a distributor announcement here.   At first, the reaction was minimal until a 5-minute clip in 2-D elicited screams and laughs from the crowd. I think it looks like a potentially worthwhile examination of childhood fear.

But really this brief presentation was about The Final Destination, which might have shown too much before its August 28th release. All I remember from the barrage of carnage was a young man’s back being pressed and separated through a chain-link fence (very Ghost Ship), a stray racing car tire obliterating a young gal’s head (you’ve seen this teased in the trailer), as well as Nick Zano’s character’s vision of his death. I’m still waiting for more from that car-wash scene. This really could be better than Final Destination 2.

The Gaslamp Stadium in San Diego will host a special Wednesday evening screening of Twilight that will include introductions from members of the cast.

Which members of the cast? That’s not made particularly clear. That said, if you’re a fan, we’re guessing you’re willing to get tickets to the screening on the chance that your favorite Forks resident will be in attendance. Besides, given the advance frenzy over the New Moon panel, you may have a better chance at getting into this screening.

Martin Scorsese to direct Sinatra biopic

After talking for years about wanting to make a film about Frank Sinatra, it looks like Martin Scorsese is finally making the dream a reality, as Universal confirmed today that they and development partner Mandalay Pictures have asked Scorsese to direct the film. This is, of course, the epic kind of news not heard often enough in Hollywood lately, and it feels just right that Mr. Scorsese will be the one guiding this story to the screen.

Mandalay and Universal have secured the rights to the story from the Sinatra family, the rights to use Sinatra’s music via Warner Music Group and a script by Phil Alden Robinson is already in progess, so the giant question looming now is, of course: who will play Frances Albert Sinatra?

The role is the stuff that Oscar dreams are made of, and it will be interesting to see if an established actor will win the right to play The Chairman of the Board, or if an unknown will get the break of a lifetime. Will they choose someone who has the right look, or go with someone who has the vocal capabilities to bring his classic songs and sound to life?

We’re also excited by the all the possibilities for intriguing supporting roles; there could actually be some interesting casting fights going on around Hollywood to play the likes of Ava Gardner, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., etc.

Phil Alden Robinson writing screenplay based on life of Legendary American entertainer

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire/ — Universal Pictures has acquired the feature film project Sinatra from Mandalay Pictures for Academy Award® winner Martin Scorsese to direct, it was announced today.

Oscar® nominated screenwriter (Field of Dreams) Phil Alden Robinson is writing the screenplay for Sinatra based on the life of the iconic entertainer. Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures have been developing the project, after securing the Frank Sinatra life rights and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE) – a joint venture of the Sinatra Estate and Warner Music Group.

He appeared in 58 films winning three Oscars® and two Golden Globe awards, in addition to a lifelong legacy of humanitarian work.

Guber and Schulman will produce the film for Mandalay Pictures with Scorsese producing on behalf of Sikelia Productions. Former President of Worldwide Music Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, Gary LeMel, Tina Sinatra and Robinson will serve as Executive Producers.
